Support Multiple Myeloma Awareness | Homecoming 2026
Description
Hokie Hope for Multiple Myeloma is a Homecoming platform dedicated to spreading awareness
and support of patients with Multiple Myeloma. Multiple Myeloma is a cancer that forms in
plasma cells and builds up in bone marrow. These cancerous cells cause patients to have bone
pain, fatigue, constant infections, and a number of short term symptoms that affect daily life.
Multiple Myeloma has no clear cause. This means that anyone could be at risk of developing
the disease, because it is also not commonly passed down through family lines. Treatment can
help to control Multiple Myeloma and reduce complications or symptoms. There is no found
cure, and most patients in remission will eventually have to resume treatment due to returning
symptoms.
I chose this platform, because I had a very close family friend and teacher in my life develop this
disease. It came without warning, and I think that is important to spread awareness to those
who may not know what this disease is or its effects on the body. Without him I would not be a
Hokie, and his love for Virginia Tech always showed through him. Multiple Myeloma affected
one Hokie, who is to say that there are not more people in our community who will have to go
through the same fight. Through this platform, I aim to spread awareness of this disease and
provide opportunities for students to learn how they can serve Multiple Myeloma patients within the Hokie community.
No Hokie fights alone, and we can ensure that with your support.
