Support the student volunteers of Virginia Tech to help them give back to residents of Blacksburg and the New River Valley. The Big Event In 2027, The Big Event at Virginia Tech celebrates its 25th anniversary! Since 2002, The Big Event at Virginia Tech has completed tens of thousands of service projects and has sent even more student volunteers to homeowners all across Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and the New River Valley. The Big Event follows the famous Virginia Tech saying, "Ut Prosim" as its calling to serve our local surrounding community and is how the organization made its saying, "One big day. One big thanks. One big event." In 2026, more than 6,300 volunteers completed nearly 1,200 service projects throughout the Virginia Tech community. From spreading mulch and cleaning windows to painting and completing yardwork, these projects give Hokies the opportunity to thank the neighbors who make our community feel like home. All projects are completed free of charge for participating residents, and your support helps cover the event’s operating costs so that thousands of volunteers can come together for this day of service. All smiles from the volunteers after a great day of hard work and giving back! The funds from this campaign will all go towards day of operations for The Big Event which includes the t-shirts given to the volunteers, the stage for our opening ceremonies, and food for our staff. The t-shirts are the most important, as they allow homeowners to distinguish the volunteers from other Blacksburg residents and/or Virginia Tech students, helping to ensure The Big Event is safe for both our volunteers and homeowners. GSRS Provides students with a platform to communicate their research across the far-reaching disciplines of our department. GSRS at Virginia Tech The Geosciences Research Symposium (GSRS) is a long-standing tradition in the Department of Geosciences at Virginia Tech. This year, the 32nd annual GSRS will be held on March 18th and 19th! This event features two days of research presentations from graduate and undergraduate students, offering a platform to share science across our department's disciplines. GSRS promotes growth for promising geoscientists in a collegial environment by providing peer and faculty feedback on their research and presentation skills. Conversations during this event also foster a greater sense of community in the department and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and professional development. GSRS is entirely student-led, student-organized, and supported by gifts from folks like you. Your contribution will allow students to focus on developing their research communication abilities, providing an opportunity to sharpen the leadership, mentorship, and team-building skills it takes to organize an event like GSRS. "GSRS is a great opportunity to see and hear everyone in the department. It's a beacon of togetherness." -Helen Burch Leading up to the symposium, we will present our tenth year of the pre-GSRS Workshop Series. The workshops provide monthly graduate-student-led tutorials on navigating professional conferences and future career paths for both graduate and undergraduate students planning to attend the symposium. Topics range from formatting a talk for a professional conference to hands-on science communication activities. The workshops facilitate skill development that our students can put into practice during GSRS and employ for years to come. "Participating in the GSArtS workshop last year was an awesome opportunity to present my research through a creative medium, rather than traditional writing." - Carly Bauer Many of our undergraduate students have hands-on experience conducting original research under the supervision of an advisor. The poster session allows undergraduates to present in front of a supportive community, giving them the confidence to present at larger national conferences. With the help of your donations, we will cover the cost of printing for each student. GSRS concludes with the ever-popular banquet on Friday evening. This gathering celebrates another successful GSRS with a delicious spread of food and drinks. Because we appreciate your contributions, we are offering our top donors the opportunity to name an award to honor a loved one, which will be given at the banquet ceremony to the best student presenters. We invite and encourage all who can attend to join us for this annual rendezvous of alumni, faculty, students, and friends of Geosciences. Help our string students play the baseline! Virginia Tech Music The award-winning VT String Project (VTSP) has received matching funding from the Classics for Kids Foundation (CFKF) to purchase two 1/8 size double basses! CFKF is providing an award of $1,848, and we need to raise an additional $1,848. Double basses are more expensive than other string instruments because of their size. Owning these small-sized or "baby basses" will allow us to get them into the hands of our youngest students with financial need, who want to learn the double bass. Your gift today allows us to give the gift of music for years to come!What parents are saying about VTSP:"Living in a rural area, access to quality classical string music education can be limited. Support our first-generation college students College of Science Support first-generation college students as they navigate academic life, find community, and reach their goals. Your gift will directly support resources and programs that help first generation college students build confidence and feel connected, from individual peer mentoring to academic workshops. In partnership with Public Health, ATOMS (Access to Opportunities & Mentoring in Science) Program is our flagship peer mentoring experience, pairing incoming students with upper-level science majors to help guide them through their first year at Virginia Tech. These small mentoring pods meet weekly and connect students to the people, tools, and advice they need to succeed. We target our program towards first-generation college students to support their transition to college. Since starting in 2022, we have supported over 450 first year students through ATOMS. Our goal is to raise $7,500 to support these efforts and expand access to mentoring, research opportunities, and student support services. We host engaging weekly events throughout the semester from office hours and workshops to social mixers and research panels. These events help students build community, confidence, and a strong academic network for first generation college students. Your gift will directly support resources and programs that help first generation college students build confidence, connect with mentors, and thrive from the ATOMS peer mentoring program to academic workshops and study nights. Whether you’re sponsoring a coffee chat, a student-led event, or a full mentoring pod, your contribution helps first-generation students feel supported and seen.
