Opening Opportunities with Olivia is all about raising awareness about the inequality in higher education. Across Virginia, there are significantly less students attending four year institutions in the New River Valley than in other regions of the state. Olivia’s campaign will have Virginia Tech students reflect on their own academic journey and find ways to empower students of all backgrounds to find the higher education program that works best for them.
The Beyond Boundaries Scholars program, which President Sands announced in 2016, is an annually awarded scholarship supporting underrepresented students at Virginia Tech. This year’s class of recipients are First Generation College Students and are Pell Grant eligible (financial need). All money collected for Beyond Boundaries ($1M goal with $1M match from Virginia Tech) goes into one pot and then is distributed to eligible students. Beyond Boundaries is proud to sponsor Opening Opportunities with Olivia to help underrepresented students believe in themselves and their academic potential.
