Breaking Barriers with Kayla and Student Opportunities and Achievement Resources

Hi, my name is Kayla Renee Scott. I am a senior at Virginia Tech studying Cognitive & Behavioral Neuroscience, Public Health, and General Professional Theatre.

Breaking Barriers with Kayla aims to prioritize the need for health awareness, inclusion, and equality for underserved and underrepresented communities on the Virginia Tech campus and around the New River Valley. As an underrepresented student, I have personally experienced inadequate healthcare access due to the constraining barriers I faced daily: socioeconomic status, single-parent household, and my skin color. Breaking Barriers Kayla aims to eliminate the obstacles hindering individuals from reaching optimum healthcare access. No matter the circumstances, everyone should be afforded the same opportunity to thrive.

I am grateful to partner with the Student Opportunity and Achievement Resource Program (SOAR) at Virginia Tech. SOAR's mission is a holistic support program dedicated to welcoming and retaining underrepresented minority students at Virginia Tech, promoting their success through campus collaboration. The SOAR program offers students coaching, advocacy, support, and assistance resources.

Entering the Hokie Nation last semester, SOAR immediately welcomed me with open arms and directed me to various resources available to help my academic success. My platform and the SOAR program connect on many levels because we both strive to provide resources to underrepresented and underserved communities.

Gifts of any amount will go towards supporting SOAR's work with underrepresented communities and will make a difference in the experience of the students involved.

Thank you in advance for your gift!
