Since 2011, the University Libraries, volunteers from across campus, and Hokie parents have cranked up the grills to make thousands of grilled cheese sandwiches for hungry Hokies during finals week. Every semester, volunteers flip sandwiches, serve cookies and fruit, pour hot chocolate, and give encouraging hugs to stressed-out students while they finish up their final exams and projects.
Elania White, a mom of two Hokies and past volunteer, helped prepare and serve sandwiches and snacks to students studying in Newman Library. "We need to do this," said White. "A lot of kids don't have anyone here to help. Some don't have any meal plan money left and this is a hot meal for them. An encouraging word and knowing someone cares makes all the difference for students."
Cheesy Nights will begin on Thursday, Dec. 8 and continue Dec. 9, Dec. 11, Dec. 12 on the plaza outside of Newman Library's café.
Monetary donations help make Cheesy Nights happen. All food and drinks are purchased with private funds. Help support Hokies during finals week and give to Cheesy Nights. Every dollar given to Cheesy Nights will help fill Hokie bellies and give students the encouragement they need to finish their semester strong!
