Artificial Turf Project

The Recreational Sports Department is excited to announce the “Artificial Turf Project Initiative” for the Sport Club Fields located off of Beamer Way (across the road from the Recreational Sports Field House and Intramural Turf Fields).

The Sport Club Fields are currently a natural grass complex comprised of 4 fields; a men’s lacrosse field, a women’s lacrosse field, a shared men’s & women’s rugby field, and a shared men’s & women’s soccer field.  The turf project has been initiated as an important investment in our Sport Club Program and as a way to provide additional turf fields for the Department of Recreational Sports and the Virginia Tech community.   The project’s goal is to turf the lower 2 fields that historically have had severe drainage issues due to Blacksburg’s wet climate. This project is much-needed and overdue, and when finished will provide a synthetic turf option for sport club home events, tournaments, and practices.

The Sport Club program is comprised of roughly 1,200 members, with the outdoor, on-campus sport clubs consisting of approximately 370 members who collectively comprise approximately 25% of the sport club student-athlete population.  These student-athletes represent sport clubs that have won regional and national championships, and have qualified for numerous conference playoff appearances.  National Top 10 rankings for our Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s & Women’s Rugby, and Men’s & Women’s Soccer programs have become commonplace through the hard work of these team’s dedicated student-athletes.

Knowing the tremendous passion of the Hokie Nation, we have set a goal for this project to be completed by Fall of 2023, but we need your help. We are calling on all alumni, students, faculty, staff, family, and friends to participate in this effort by giving to the “Artificial Turf Project Initiative”  or to a specific sport club that resonates with you.  Our fundraising goal is to reach $500,000 over this next year in order to fund this project. Please consider making a financial commitment today!  Together, as Hokie Nation, we can raise the bar and commit to helping our students excel both on and off the field.
