My name is Ali Buck and I am so excited to partner with the Special Olympics organization, Spread the Word to End the Word for my Homecoming campaign. My campaign focuses on starting the conversation with students, friends and even strangers to stop using the word retarded. My hope is that my efforts show students that using the r-word hurts, and it personally affects people that you encounter every day. Love definitely isn’t retarded and as a Virginia Tech student body, we need to get involved.
I am honored to be a part of the 2018 Virginia Tech Homecoming Court. As I mentioned, during homecoming week I will be focusing on spreading awareness to end the word retarded. As part of my campaign, I would also love to host a special needs prom during the spring of 2019. But I need your help. First, follow my page on Facebook to stay updated on what we are doing during homecoming week. If you are local in Blacksburg, come stop by my booths during homecoming week to sign the pledge to stop using the word retarded. Start the conversation with your friends. If you feel moved by this platform, any donation will help make my idea an exciting reality next semester.
This can’t be done without you. So don’t forget to Rally Behind Ali, and Spread the Word to End the Word.
