Autism prevalence has now reached one in every 59 children in the USA. The Autism Society launched a nationwide effort 25 years ago to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with ASD is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. I'd like to go beyond simply promoting autism awareness to encouraging students and the community to work side by side in a movement toward acceptance and appreciation. Expanding our impact from awareness to active outreach and appreciation ensures acceptance and inclusion in schools and communities that results in true appreciation of the unique aspects those with ASD.
April 2nd is world Autism Awareness Day, I'd like to use this day to help expand outreach to the VT Community with things such as handing out flyers/spread awareness, invite speakers to host talks/lectures about autism to students and the community and host a day long event. The day long event would include field games/food on Drillfield in order to spread awareness and help fundraise for ‘autism speaks’, pass out autism ribbons with puzzle piece and hang blue lights around educational booths for ‘light it up blue’ campaign with Autism Speaks (blue is the national color for autism awareness). The event would include foods such as lollipops and popcorn as well as people getting to play with ‘spin the wheel’ game to learn facts about autism and how they can be an advocate/donate/fundraise for Autism Speaks, and shine blue lights once the sun goes down.
