Nearly every 30 seconds a limb amputation occurs somewhere worldwide. These amputations are a result of diabetes, landmines, death trains, motor vehicle accidents, and trauma. A staggering 35,000,000 of those individuals don’t have access to prosthetic care, with 71% being individuals with below the knee amputations. A typical below the knee prosthetic costs upwards of $40,000, leaving many hopeless.Thankfully, that doesn't have to be the end to their stories, Hope to Walk (HTW) is a faith-based, non-profit organization founded in the New River Valley that has invented a prosthetic leg that costs only $100 to make. HTW’s prosthetics are accessible to individuals in Honduras, Guatemala, Vietnam, and Haiti at no cost to the patients. They train locals in these communities how to construct prosthetics to empower and encourage sustainability.
It is truly a humble blessing and honor to partner with Hope to Walk and represent Virginia Tech Chi Alpha Campus Ministries on the Virginia Tech 2018 Homecoming Court. The goal of this platform is to host hands-on workshops for tech students to live out “Ut Prosim” by helping create HTW prosthetics. The funds of this campaign will go towards buying the materials and supplies needed to host this workshop at Virginia Tech. Every $100 donated funds the materials that would be needed to construct an entire prostethic leg "Honor Of" of the Hokie Nation during the workshops. These key materials include: one-inch wood dowel bonded inside a PVC pipe, casting socket, fiberglass, and neoprene sleeve.
Together we can help transform lives by giving the gift of walking.
