The African Students Association - Virginia Tech Chapter is a non-exclusive, cultural, social, and educational body geared towards serving the community and promoting unity and cultural awareness between all who find interest in Africa and its diaspora. Family is an important part of Africans lives and culture. In wanting whats best for our community which is also known as our family here at Virginia Tech, we saw a lack of understanding of mental health illness in our general body and the awareness of how to cope with mental illness. This is why this is an important topic and we felt a need for a change in the way mental health was discussed here on campus and the lack there of discussions on a campus-wide level.
The money would go towards implementing the events and activities for the mental health week such as paying for different instructors to teach different coping mechanisms, paying for the spaces being use and paying for all other things needed to make this week successful and impactful. In a way The African Student Association can continue to implement this on a annual basis long after I graduate.
